Delete the negative; accentuate the positive! War taught me that not everything is glamorous. It's sometimes said that I'm rebellious and I do things to push people's buttons, but I just like the challenge. Attitude is everything. I am never satisfied with myself and that is what keeps me going - I have no post-satisfaction.

I love women's fashion, but women don't need me as much as men do. It's the men who have nothing to wear. There are always protests, whether you do something good or bad. Even if you do something beneficial, people say you do it because it's advertising. I love my beauty. It's not my fault. My shows are about the complete woman who swallows it all. It's a question of survival. We must never confuse elegance with snobbery.

I love things that age well - things that don't date, that stand the test of time and that become living examples of the absolute best. I truly believe that philanthropy and commerce can work together. First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn't like anyone else's. I always thought what you wore underneath was as important as what you wear on top. An evening dress that reveals a woman's ankles while walking is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen.

It's hard to balance everything. It's always challenging. Fashion is always of the time in which you live. It is not something standing alone. But the grand problem, the most important problem, is to rejeuvenate women. To make women look young. Then their outlook changes. They feel more joyous. I like the things around me to be beautiful and slightly dreamy, with a feeling of worldliness. Grunge is a hippied romantic version of punk. Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.
